Flashback to June 2018 – Metricon Stadium has been announced as a venue for a T20 International Cricket game and three Big Bash League matches. The Stadium had never hosted cricket before, we didn’t have a wicket, but we were excited and determined to put on a good brilliant show for Australian cricket fans and the Gold Coast.
Fast forward to January 2019 – Metricon Stadium has just finished it’s first Summer of Cricket. Since the announcement, our Horticulture team has spent countless hours on developing two drop in wickets and cultivating a plan to become the first venue in Queensland with a drop in cricket wicket. Our Facilities team did not stop until everything was ready and checked from screws in chairs to buttons in elevators, and our Events and Operations team have been dotting every ‘I’ and crossing every ‘t’ to ensure this season was one to remember. It was.
We saw four cricket games come to Metricon Stadium in the 2018/2019 season: Australia played India in a T20 international match, the Brisbane Heat took on the Hobart Hurricanes and the Sydney Sixers, and finally, the Melbourne Stars defeated the Sydney Thunder during our final game on January 5. It feels like yesterday that the announcement was made, so to think that seven months have already passed by and the season is finished is mind-blowing. We are sad to see it already over, but we are proud and super excited for the 2019/2020 Big Bash League season. We are proud of our staff, we are proud to be Qld’s first drop in cricket wicket venue, we are proud of every spectator who walked through our gates, and we are proud to be a major part of Gold Coast’s sporting history.
It is time for us to get ready for the Gold Coast Caravan and Outdoor Expo in March and then onto the first AFL game at Metricon Stadium for the season on March 31 when the Gold Coast SUNS take on Fremantle. Until then…
